Opposition Leader Mark Golding Calls for Increased Investment in Field Events Following Historic Olympic Win

Opposition Leader Mark Golding has emphasized the need for consistent support and investment in field events, which he noted often struggle to attract corporate sponsorship. His remarks came in the wake of Jamaica’s historic gold medal win in the men’s discus final at the Paris Olympics.

Jamaica secured its first gold medal at the Games when 25-year-old Roje Stona stunned a high-quality field with a remarkable throw of 70 meters, setting a new Olympic record.

In his congratulatory message to Stona, Mr. Golding highlighted the years of dedication and hard work by the athlete and his coaches, which culminated in this groundbreaking achievement. He stressed the importance of sustained investment in field events to ensure continued success on the global stage.

“This success has been years in the making, with three dedicated coaches taking it on as a labor of love. Their hard work has produced results at the junior level and now, for the first time, medals at the senior level—a phenomenal achievement. In reflecting on the 2024 Games, it’s essential now that we think about consistent support for field events. These events have really delivered for us so far in these Games. Continued investment and support are crucial to maintaining and building on this phenomenal success,” Golding asserted.

Golding’s call for increased support reflects a broader recognition of the potential of Jamaican athletes in field events and the need to ensure that these talents receive the backing necessary to thrive and continue to bring glory to the nation.
